Absent or Tardy
I hope to see your child every day. So much of what we do is almost impossible to replicate and can’t be done
as homework. In the event of an absence, please contact me and we will work together to make sure your child
gets everything he or she needs.
Snack, Lunch, and School Notes
Students will have a morning “working snack break” each day. Please pack a small snack and drink for this time. Water bottles are also encouraged, although there is a bubbler in the classroom to help with thirst.
Burgess uses the NutriKids lunch program. In order to help facilitate the program, please help your child learn
his/her 4 digit ID. Parents may pay in advance by creating a NutriKids account or by sending payment to school
in an envelope labeled with the child’s first and last name.
Lunch (includes milk) $2.50
Milk Only $0.50 each
Students are responsible for turning in lunch money and/or other items that are brought to school with them. Any important items, such as picture money or permission forms, will be asked for first thing in the morning. If you child does not turn in these important items, please let me know.
Recess
Second graders will go outside for recess whenever possible. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. Students who wish to play in the snow must be wearing snow pants and boots.
Birthdays
This year Burgess will continue to implement a healthy celebrations program. We will still celebrate birthdays, but we ask that you do not send in food items.
If your child is interested in handing out birthday invitations in class, I ask that they give one to everyone in the class, all of the boys or all of the girls. Otherwise, invitations need to be dealt with outside of the classroom to avoid hurt
feelings. Thanks!
Parent Communication
There are several methods in which we can stay in touch. I check my email several times a day. My email address is:
[email protected]. You will receive a newsletter every month that will let you know what we are learning in the
classroom as well as any other important information. Finally, we have a class website that includes a lot of information regarding spelling lists, homework, and save the dates. In order to access this site go to the Burgess Elementary Homepage > Students> Teacher WebPages. From there, simply click on my name and you will be directed to our webpage.
Spelling
Students will learn new spelling words each week. A pre-test will be given on Mondays and their spelling test will be given on Fridays. We will review and practice the words daily in class. However, please practice and study these words with your child. Each Friday, students will bring their spelling blue books home for you to see. Please be sure to sign the designated page and return this book with your child on Monday.
Homework
As you know, homework is an important part of building responsibility and reinforcing skills outside of the classroom.
Although it is not graded, it is extremely important that students put in the effort to complete it and bring it back to school when due. Students should attempt homework independently first and seek help only after they have made the effort to try it on their own.
Most weeks, students will have homework Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. A homework packet will be sent home on Monday and will be due on Friday. Homework will include a variety of math, reading, grammar, science and social studies assignments.
Clip Chart and Mr. Potato Head
I strongly believe in rewarding and acknowledging good behavior and classroom collaboration! In our classroom students will be using a colored “clip chart.” Students will be moving their clip up or down the chart based on their
choices each day. Each time they make it to the top of the chart, the student is rewarded with a gem. Once the student has 10 gems we celebrate with a “drum-roll” and at that time they select a reward and start with a new clip.
If it happens, that a student makes it to the bottom of the chart, parents will be notified. In addition, as a class we will be trying to put Mr. Potato head together when the class is complemented as a whole group. Once Mr. Potato head is built, we will vote on a prize.
Home Folder
Students will be provided with a “Home Folder” to bring to and from school. Important papers, notes, homework, and graded work will be placed in this folder at the end of each school day. It is the students’ responsibility to get their mail at the end of every day, place it in their folder, bring it home, empty it, and share what is inside with an adult. Anything that needs to come back to school the following day should be placed in the folder. This helps the students build organizational skills.
